Serena Williams is one of the greatest athletes of all time. Williams’ career has been incredible to watch and at age 34 it does not appear she will be retiring anytime soon. Actually, it is quite the opposite; 2015 was a spectacular year for her. This is the year Williams won three major titles, appeared in a huge movie, and was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year.
Williams started the year by winning the Australian Open. A match that she literally had to fight through; she was seen vomiting before and during the match. She was on to the next major tournament, the French Open. Williams defeated Lucie Safarova in three sets to win her 20th Grand Slam title. This was her third straight majors win, the only other person to do that was Serena Williams!
Williams work was far from over as she went into Wimbledon. She had to face some familiar enemies including Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, and her own sister Venus Williams. Despite the competition, Williams was able to win her fourth majors title in a row, completing the “Serena Slam”. The win was her sixth title at Wimbledon and her 21st Grand Slam title. Her next goal was winning the “Grand Slam”, winning all four majors titles in a calendar year by capturing the win at the US Open.
The semi-final matchup featured Williams facing off with Roberta Vinci which looked to favor Williams and help her achieve her goal of winning the “Grand Slam”. In what was called the biggest upset in tennis history, Vinci defeated Williams in three sets to go on to the US Open final. It was the last tournament Williams played in for the year, announcing that she was taking the rest of 2015 off to heal old injuries and get back on track for 2016. Despite her surprising loss at the US Open, Williams is still ranked the number one female tennis player in the world.
Along with her outstanding year on the court, Williams had a great year off of it. She was rumored to be dating the biggest artist Drake after he was spotted sitting in her VIP box for most of her tournament matches. She also held her second show at New York Fashion Week for her HSN Signature Collection. How can she top this year in 2016? It will be hard, but we all will be watching!
