What a way to send out one of the greatest defensive players of all time. Behind the arm of Joe Flacco, the Baltimore Ravens became world champions once again. While it was talent that got them there, knowing this was their leader Ray Lewis’ final year in the league definitely motivated this team to player at an even higher level.
After big wins against the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, and New England Patriots, the Ravens were headed to the Super Bowl. Their opponent, the San Francisco 49ers was one of the hottest teams after the emergence of quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick had the ability to throw the ball and run the ball himself, something that gave defenses nightmares since he took over for Alex Smith.
Baltimore got off to an early lead with Flacco throwing three touchdowns in the first half. It did not look good for San Francisco who came out flat. After Beyonce tore the house down at halftime, it was time for the second half to begin. The second half got off to a fast start with Jacoby Jones returning the kickoff for 108 yards, setting a Super Bowl records. Baltimore had a 28-6 lead when suddenly the lights went out.Something happened during the blackout that sparked the 49er offense. Once the lights went back, San Francisco scored 17 unanswered points and made the score 31-29. With four and half minutes left, Justin Tucker’s kick made the score 34-29, but San Francisco was still very much alive. It was up to Ray Lewis and this defense to get stops. In a smart coaching decision, Baltimore decided to give up the two points and allowed the 49ers to sack Flacco in the end zone. This not only wasted time, but put the ball back in their hands.
When the 49ers were unable to come back, it was official. Ray Lewis would retire as a winner. He would not get the MVP award like he did in 2000, that honor went to quarterback Joe Flacco. With the departure of Anquan Boldin, Ed Reed, and Ray Lewis, the Ravens have struggled this season and missed the playoffs this season. Super Bowl 47 was also the first time two brothers who were head coaches faced each other.
