When a couple of first-time managers were introduced to their ball clubs in the offseason, baseball fans all over the country pondered how they would live up to the hype. Aaron Boone was hired by the New York Yankees to replace a confident Joe Girardi and Mickey Callaway was brought on to bring new life to a miserable New York Mets club led by Terry Collins. Well, it seems as if things are in reverse and the Mets are shocking not only their cross-borough rivals, but all of MLB.
The New York Mets are currently on a eight-game winning streak and they have begun the 2018 campaign with an 10-1 record, their best start in franchise history. Their starting rotation has had some quality outings, the bullpen has improved, and of course, the offense has been red hot! What has Mickey Callaway inflicted on this team just ten games in? Can they keep this stride going all year long?
Unfortunately, the New York Yankees are a different story. This is a team that came ONE win away from the elusive World Series last season, and fell just short. After a few offseason moves, especially the acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton, the Bronx Bombers were ready to put that nickname to full use. The team is currently sitting at 6-6, third place in the American League East. The team is already dealing with a slew of injuries to start off the year, one of which is CC Sabathia, who is dealing with a lingering hip problem. Stanton, so far, hasn’t lived up to his hype and is slugging just .196 with three home runs.
It’s definitely a different view of New York baseball teams and we’re only twelve games into the new season. Can Mickey Callaway propel these so-called new Mets into the postseason? Will Giancarlo Stanton break his slump? Time will tell, but for now, baseball season is already quite intriguing for players, coaches, and fans alike.
