As if former NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez had not caused enough damage, his girlfriend and cousin are also now facing jail time. Shayanna Jenkins, Hernandez’s girlfriend and mother of his daughter, was indicted on one count of perjury in a Massachusetts court yesterday. His cousin, Tanya Singleton, was also indicted yesterday on one count of conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact. As confusing as that sounds, it simply means Hernandez’s cousin allegedly bought one of the accomplices a plane ticket to go to Florida.
Jenkins and Hernandez have a 9-month old daughter named Avielle together. Jenkins faces up to two and a half years in county jail. It is unlikely that she will serve the full time, but if she does face any jail time their daughter would be placed in the custody of Jenkins’ family. Authorities allege that she hid evidence from them and tried to mislead their investigation.
The couple have had their own problems before including a domestic incident in their California rental property in which authorities were called. The couple had been fighting very loudly when a neighbor heard them and decided to call the police. When they arrived at the home, Jenkins said she was fine and did not want to press charges. Yet another person covered for Hernandez instead of letting him deal with the consequences of his actions. Look where that got him.
