Yet another athlete who can afford a taxi chooses to drive drunk instead. San Francisco OLB Aldon Smith was arrested this morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after crashing into a tree. Smith was the driver of a single car accident at 7:00 AM. Interesting to note is the time of the arrest. Smith was more than likely on his way to practice. I am sure his teammates will appreciate that! CSNBayArea.Com writer Matt Maiocco broke the news that Smith was identified as the driver.
This is far from the first time Smith has been trouble. Last year, Smith was arrested for DUI. Since that arrest, he has been sued following a shooting at a house party he hosted. Smith admitted to firing a gun shot in the air to break up a fight at his home. He was also stabbed at the party, but did not miss any significant time on the field. Pretty sad that Smith cannot stay out of trouble. His level of talent is rivaled by very few in the league. However, this latest run in with the law could force the 49ers to bench the All-Pro linebacker.
[UPDATE] Smith blew a .15 BAC at the time of arrest putting him nearly two times the legal limit. New details have come out that Smith was also charged with possession of marijuana and prescription pills. Using marijuana breaks the NFL’s substance abuse policy and may result in a lengthy suspension. [popup show=”IMG1″][UPDATE] Despite all the issues surrounding Smith, he will play on Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen spoke with San Jose police sergeant and tweeted the following regarding Smith’s accident.
