With the NHL trade deadline right around the corner, Monday, March 2nd to be exact, some teams decided to get a head start on making moves.
On Wednesday, February 25, the Los Angeles Kings took part in a swift trade, acquiring 28-year-old defenseman Andrej Sekera from the Carolina Hurricanes. The Kings are currently playing without two defensemen, Stanley Cup hero Alec Martinez who is suffering from concussion symptoms, and Slava Voynov who has been suspended, so hopefully Sekera will be an asset to the team while they need him the most. After this season, Sekera can possibly become a free agent being that the Kings did not yet try to negotiate a contract for their new team member.
Sekera was the second trade on Wednesday for the Hurricanes, but it was probably the biggest one of the day in the league. Earlier in the day, forward Jiri Tlusty was traded to the Winnipeg Jets for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2016 draft.
