First it was quarterback Eli Manning who spoke highly of himself, now it is rookie running back David Wilson. Eli was a little different in that he had already lead his team to a Super Bowl and had an MVP year last year after winning a second title. David Wilson, while proven he can be an explosive player, has only played six games as a professional. However, he thinks that he is already leaving an impression in the NFL.
“I think at the end of my career, I’ll be in the Hall of Fame,” the rookie told Newsday. “I know myself, and I know [when] I have guys around me that feel the same way, which I feel I do. When I get my opportunity, the sky is not the limit. I think it’s past it. You have to believe in yourself to do good things. This is how I feel.”
Confidence is a great thing to have, but your career just started. Prove your talent before thinking about the Hall of Fame. Is it a New York thing to have a big ego? Wilson has been a dynamic player for the Giants, but he still has ways to go. Wilson has one touchdown and 87 rushing yards, but his numbers for kick returns is what makes him special. He has 540 returning yards, including a 66 yard return last week against San Francisco. Probably the weirdest part of Wilson’s interview came when he compared himself to birth control.
“I’m like birth control,” Wilson said. “You have to believe in me. Like birth control, 99.9 percent of the time I’m going to come through for you.”
I am not quite sure I have ever heard a person compare themselves to contraceptives. However, if Wilson is saying that he is normally going to shine, I guess his first carry of his career would be that one time he didn’t come through. On the carry Wilson fumbled and was benched for the rest of the game against division rivals Dallas.
