There is no possible reasoning or rationale for Atlanta radio station 790 The Zone taking a dig at Steve Gleason. Gleason is a former New Orleans Saint who blocked a punt during the Super Bowl and allowed the Saints to bring home the Lombardi Trophy to a devastated New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Gleason then developed ALS which forced him to retire and has taken away his ability to do the most simple tasks that we all take for granted. Gleason is still considered a hero in New Orleans for his on the field play, but he is an inspiration for his life off the field. Gleason lost the ability to talk and is now forced to use a computer monitor that provides a voice for him.
Thinking this was funny, 790 The Zone decided to do a mock interview with “Steve” and for his answers use a robot voice. Many listeners called in and expressed their disgust for the radio station’s tasteless humor. There is nothing funny about ALS nor is it okay to make jokes about a person’s disease. This was completely classless and the show needs to be suspended and possibly cancelled. Gleason is an inspiration to others struggling with ALS and well respected in the sports world. Former teammate Scott Fujita came to his friend’s defense after hearing about the incident:
The shock jocks did issue an ‘apology’ that stated they apologize for their ‘attempt at humor’ that ‘backfired’. Where did they think making fun of a person’s illness would be funny? Clearly, the radio station needs to reevaluate their staff and make them do some damage control. Fundraise for people struggling with ALS? A direct talk to Scott Gleason saying they meant no harm? There should be some form of repercussions for all involved, especially whoever thought this was funny.
The “Mayhem in the AM” radio hosts have been suspended. 790 The Zone released this apology on their website:
“We deeply regret the comments made by Mayhem In The AM this morning on 790 The Zone regarding former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason. 790 The Zone, Lincoln Financial Media, our sponsors and partners in no way endorse or support the unfortunate and offensive commentary concerning Mr. Gleason this morning. The members of the show involved with this incident have been suspended indefinitely pending further management review of their actions.”
