The MLB trade deadline has come and gone and we have learned who is ready to contend and who is ready to look towards next season. This could not be more apparent than with the team just north of us. The Blue Jays have made it very clear that despite being six games back of the New York Yankees for the AL East lead, they believe this is their year.
Their offense is already one of the best in the league, but of course it could be better. To do that, Toronto acquired SS Troy Tulowitzki who made an impact immediately, hitting a home run in his second at-bat. It was a deal that stunned almost everyone in baseball including Tulowitzki, but he seems to be ready to help this team. Tulo joins a lineup that includes Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, and Josh Donaldson; next, it was time for Toronto to get some pitching.
It became abundantly clear that this team wasn’t messing around when it was announced they were the winners of the David Price sweepstakes. Price was one of the most valuable names on the market this season and was linked to many different teams. Giving up three prospects seemed worth the gamble for the Blue Jays who want to end a 22 year playoff drought. Price is a great addition to this Toronto team who needed an ace on their pitching staff which was good, but definitely not good enough to make a playoff push.
This team also added OF Ben Revere and relief pitchers LaTroy Hawkins and Mark Lowe to make this team one of the most complete in the league. Trading away so many prospects may come back to hurt this team in the future, but this team is not worried about it. It has all the tools to make a run in October, but it will have to make up a lot of ground to catch the Yankees.
