The National Women’s Hockey League had the first championship of their inaugural season, a best-of-3 series between the Boston Pride and the Buffalo Beauts. The Pride took home the prized Isobel cup after sweeping the series on March 13th.
The first game, on Friday, March 12, was a tied game until the Pride came out on top in overtime to win the game 4-3. Pride forward Hilary Knight grabbed her team the OT win after shooting a goal on a penalty shot that came her way in OT.
The second Pride win came on Saturday with the final score being 3-1. This was the game that secured the Isobel Cup for Boston and made them the NWHL’s first championship winners. The Isobel Cup MVP was Brianna Decker because of the two goals she grabbed in the game two victory.
The Pride dedicated their win to teammate Denna Laing, who sustained a spinal injury in the Women’s Winter Classic on December 31st. The team even shared the moment of victory with Laing through Facetime after they won the cup. Laing has been recovering at a rehabilitation hospital and has been working on rebuilding her body strength, so that she can completely recover as soon as possible. Laing was overwhelmingly happy that she and her team had gone all the way and won the Isobel Cup for Boston.
Though the NWHL’s first season has concluded, the league isn’t stopping here, and is already teasing about some new things to unveil for next season.
