Days before Super Bowl 50, Denver Broncos rookie safety Ryan Murphy has been sent back to Denver following a prostitution sting in San Jose, California. Murphy and his brother were detained and questioned Tuesday by police. Murphy was eventually released and not charged in the incident, but his brother, according to several reports, was cited for solicitation.
Murphy’s status as practice squad player has not changed. Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said in a statement “we decided it was best for the team if we continued our preparations for Super Bowl 50 without him.”
The sting was conducted by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Police, according to The San Jose Mercury News. The report said the pair had been questioned by sheriff’s deputies Tuesday night at a Motel 6 in north San Jose. A spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff did not comment on the citation, but told the newspaper that the county’s human-trafficking task force had been conducting stings in the area and had already cited 10 men for solicitation.
Police detained a suspected prostitute near the motel who told the officers she needed to go to a car to retrieve some of her property. Murphy and his brother were both in the car.
Ironically enough, Kubiak said last week that he trusted his team when it came to off-the-field issues.
