It has been a crazy day in the NFL, but this story tops them all. Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker was suspended after testing positive for amphetamines. The Broncos had known about the suspension for weeks, but were hoping it would be reduced on appeal. It was not and Welker will sit out the first four games.
It is not the suspension that is surprising, despite Welker never being in trouble in the past, but the cause for the suspension. Rumors are swirling that Welker took the amphetamines at the Kentucky Derby when Welker popped a molly that was cut with the illegal substances. That may explain why Welker was seen handing out money after winning big at the race. Does it all make sense now?
This comes at a very interesting time for Welker. Welker was actually expected to miss time after suffering another concussion in during Denver’s third preseason game. Many wondered if this could be it for the receiver. He has suffered three concussions in the past ten months. Welker has said that he has no interest in retiring and in fact wants to return as soon as he is eligible which does not appear to be anytime before week five.
