It’s hard to believe there are currently zero gymnastics programs at any Historically Black College and Universities. With athletes like Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles showing out at the most elite levels in the sport, HBCUs should be promoting gymnastics programs due to the lack of representation in the sport. Black athletes should not be discouraged from going to HBCUs simply because there are simply no programs. When given the chance to compete, Black women including UCLA’s Nia Dennis and Chae Campell prove they are at the top of the class.
Brown Girls Do Gymnastics is an organization devoted to helping young women of color navigate the gymnastics world while also promoting diversity in the sport.
The organization will hold its fifth conference at Grambling State University. The conference aims to increase exposure to the sport and provide resources to parents and young women of color who wish to participate. Registration is open now for children ages six years and older.
Grambling State University President Rick Gallot spoke about why bringing gymnastic programs to HBCUs is so important,
“The need is clear and we are motivated by the opportunity we can provide for young gymnasts of color. With the right partners and sponsors, we are ready to bring the sport to life right here on our campus and build a platform for young women to advance their athletic and academic pursuits.”
