Looks like Cleveland’s 2016 resolution was a new year, new coach. With all of the rumors that have been swirling around, it looks like the Browns have finally made the decision. The team fired head coach, Mike Pettine as well as general manager Ray Farmer. As if the Browns don’t already have enough problems with their quarterback situation and a complete mess of a franchise!
Even though both firings are big news, however, Mike Pettine’s job has been on the line multiple times this season. During today’s game against Pittsburgh, reports were saying that it could happen as soon as that afternoon. Eventually, the news would come a little bit later and it doesn’t look like Pettine will get many offers. During his time as Cleveland’s head coach, he went 10-22 and the Browns finished in 4th place in the AFC North both years.
The firing of GM Ray Farmer should come as no surprise to many either. Farmer was hired in 2014 like Pettine, but Farmer became known for his “texting scandal”. Last year, the NFL learned that Farmer had sent text messages to the coaching staff during a game which lead to him being suspended for four games. As a result of the scandal, the team was also fined $250,000 by the league. Both firings are said to stem from not only the Browns lost to Pittsburgh but their terrible performance overall this season which has to include the many scandals of Johnny Manziel.
Since owner Jimmy Haslam took over in 2012, Cleveland has yet to find a solid head coach or general manager combination. The Browns have some good pieces to build around, however, the lack of consistency has always plagued this team.
