Cam Newton’s status on the field in Charlotte may be undetermined, but that didn’t stop him from bringing joy to others. Newton was in the community for his sixth annual Santa Cam’s Surprise Sleigh event. Despite having foot surgery just a week ago, Newton was all smiles as he made his way to five different locations all around Charlotte.
He arrived at multiple schools to start the day delivering $15,000 to one high school for their athletic program while handing out Visa gift cards to staff at another school. His final stop of the day was to the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte.
The Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee was met with Panthers fans pleading for the star to stay with the Panthers. He told fans it wasn’t up to him.
On Sunday, Cam Newton hosted ten children from the Levine’s Children’s Hospital at the Panthers’ against the Seahawks. Being sidelined, Newton got a chance to watch the game with the kids, something he called “disgusting” because he wanted to be on the field playing for the kids.
He told CBS Sports, “I don’t want to keep dwelling on the negativity of 2019 has been. It’s been such a blessing for me to have these experiences like this, going to different venues to put people in the holiday cheer. That’s what it was curated for and that’s what we want to keep doing.”
Cam Newton hasn’t played in three months and it’s unsure if he has played his final game for the Panthers. Newton looked like a shell of himself on the field which may make the team weary of bringing him back for the final year of his contract. However, the team has yet to find sustainable success with their backup quarterback Kyle Allen and have turned to Will Grier to make his first career start. Initially Allen was on a roll, winning five of his six first games, but the team has now lost six in a row.
