It appears the Sterlings, both Donald and Shelly, are finally out of the NBA! The Los Angeles Times is reporting Shelly Sterling has sold the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for a whopping $2 billion. Many names had been floating around including Grant Hill, Yao Ming, and even Oprah Winfrey.
The $2 billion is an astounding figure considering the Milwaukee Bucks recently sold for a mere $550 million. While everything sounds like a done deal, it still has to be approved by Donald Sterling. Despite handing over control of the sale to his estranged wife, he still has final say on the buyer. Once he gives his approval, the sale has to be approved by the 29 other owners which does not appear to be a problem.
Some may have thought he would try and move the Clippers to Seattle where he currently resides, but he has shot that allegation down. He said it makes sense to keep the team in Los Angeles, one of the biggest media markets in the country. Ballmer tried to join a group, headed by Chris Hansen, to buy the Sacramento Kings last year.
