It’s been anything, but easy for Josh Gordon in the NFL. There have been multiple suspensions and a battle with substance abuse, but his talent always allowed for second chances. After being placed on the “minor” injured reserve list, meaning the team will release him when he is healthy, his time with the New England Patriots has ended.
Gordon was battling a left knee injury and was unable to finish last week’s Thursday night game against the New York Giants. Additionally, he did not play against the New York Jets this past Monday. It is unlikely that he will remain unable to play for the rest of the season, but it’s clear he is done with the Patriots.
The Patriots made it abundantly clear that they are ready to move on from Gordon with the acquisition of Falcons’ receiver Mohamed Sanu. Even with the acquisition, the team was still quite thin at the receiver position. The move to place Gordon on IR ending his season was quite surprising even with Sanu being added.
There are some potential landing spots for Gordon this season that don’t include tanking teams. Teams like the Eagles who really need help at the receiver position could use Gordon’s ability to stretch the field. Currently, tight end Zach Ertz has been their best receiver. DeSean Jackson has been sidelined for most of the season battling an abdominal injury. His return date is still unknown.
Another team that might make sense for Gordon both professionally and personally is the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are a great team with a great quarterback. They also have a locker room that seems like it could be beneficial for keeping Gordon healthy. Seattle is thin at receiver with just Tyler Lockett and rookie DK Metcalf currently.
It’s unclear if any team will take a risk on Josh Gordon. He also should be picky about where he goes. He needs to be in the right situation not just any situation. It’s hard to believe teams won’t be interested in a young and talented player, but hopefully Josh Gordon picks what will work best for him and his health. He is set to become a free agent at the end of this season. He could be a rental for a team on the playoff bubble.
