The Dallas Cowboys are never too far away from controversy. After the controversial signing and then dismissal of domestic abuser Greg Hardy after just one season, it seemed the Boys were in the clear. That was until their rookie running back, Ezekiel Elliott was accused by his ex-girlfriend of abusing her on two separate occasions during a five-day span.
Normally, victims’ names are not public knowledge, however, Elliott’s accuser and ex-girlfriend Tiffany Thompson posted pictures of bruises and tagged Elliott in them. Despite the tagged photos, a Columbus City attorney’s office did not pursue charges against Elliott, citing a lack of evidence and inconsistent/conflicting evidence. They also noted that Elliott was very cooperative and was able to provide evidence to prove his innocence.
Even though the case has officially been closed legally, the NFL is still investigating Elliott. ESPN noted that even though Elliott was not charged, he could still be punished by the league. If Elliott does get punished, it will more than likely result in either a suspension or a fine for the rookie.
When the case closed, Stacy Elliott, Ezekiel’s father, released a statement, “I’m very relieved. I thank the prosecutors for being fair, for weighing out the evidence as it was presented. I want to thank Ezekiel’s legal team for its diligence.” Ezekiel Elliot has yet to release a statement and it seems unlikely that he will. He did, however, deny the charges initially after they were filed.
This news should help Dallas Cowboys fans breathe a sigh of relief as Elliott is an essential part of the Dallas Cowboys offense, especially after Tony Romo’s injury. If Elliott can help run the ball and Dak Prescott can limit turnovers, expectations of the team might stay pretty high. If not, then let’s just hope we don’t end up with another 4-12 season because that would be terrible and embarrassing.
