The Los Angeles Lakers are having one of the worst seasons in franchise history. A season that should have been a farewell to a legend has turned into major off-court drama. Rookie D’Angelo Russell reportedly recorded a private conversation between himself and Nick Young in a hotel room. It did not appear that Young knew he was being recorded and he is heard admitting to cheating on his fiance, Iggy Azalea.
The Lakers did everything possible to keep the video in-house, however, the locker room was fractured and it was clear after their game in Utah. Most of the locker room believe that Russell broke the locker room code, while others believe that Russell tried to prank Young and it just went wrong. The Lakers’ players have reportedly decided to isolate Russell by ignoring him.
Russell never meant for it to be released to the public and sources confirmed it was filmed months ago. This is a major learning experience for the former second overall pick. The season is almost and if he wants people to leave this in the past, then he just needs to focus on basketball. From coaches to players, it is unlikely this roster would all be around next season.
However, the blame isn’t solely on Russell though. If Nick Young hadn’t cheated, the video wouldn’t exist and if he didn’t talk about his cheating exploits, then the video still wouldn’t exist. At age 20, it’s clear Russell is not as mature as Young, but should have known better than to secretly record his teammate. It’s certainly going to be a smudge on Russell’s time in the NBA though. The public is siding with Young though except for Azalea who tweeted about the video.
