Mets’ fans don’t have much to watch for anymore, but third baseman David Wright just made this season one to remember. In a year that the Mets look to put behind them, Wright puts some history in the books. Wright has become the face of the franchise and unofficial captain of the team. He is a guy who leads by example and hustles on every play. He can add another record on top of the RBIs, runs scored, and doubles records he already holds for the Mets. During tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, during Wright’s second at-bat he broke Ed Kranepool’s hits record with his 1,419 hit of his career. It wasn’t the prettiest hit, but he did get an in-field single that Pedro Alvarez threw away and allowed a run to score and Wright to land on second. He broke the record during his 1,256th game as a Met. Humble as always, Wright had this to say when he tied the record, “I don’t think you can sit back and really enjoy this until you’re done playing — or, maybe, enjoy it a little bit in the offseason. I’m not programmed, and it’s a little odd and uncomfortable talking about something individual like this, when we’ve had our struggles in the second half and haven’t done what I think all of us feel like we were capable of doing. But I’ll enjoy it at some point — probably not tonight.” It couldn’t have happened to a better guy. Wright is the perfect example of how a baseball superstar should act on and off the field. If the Mets are smart, for once, and keep Wright long term he will become the Mets’ own Derek Jeter.
