The World Cup as been full of surprises, but none more so than defending champions Spain being knocked out of Group B by Chile. Not only did Chile defeat the powerhouse, but they held them scoreless. Spain lost their first match in humbling fashion to the Netherlands, 5-1. They needed to score at least one point to compete for a spot in the next round.
Four years ago, Spain also lost in their first matchup, but managed to right the ship in time. With Spain’s exit, Netherlands are also guaranteed a spot in the next round after they defeated Australia. Chile and Netherlands will meet on Monday to determine who will advance as group winners.
Spain’s head coach Vicente del Bosque said his team deserved to be out. “We deserved to go out. But the team showed character today, kept going and were a bit unlucky with the goals,” he told news reporters.
