After just saying goodbye to Mariano Rivera, Yankees fans will now have to bid farewell to their captain. Derek Jeter announced on his Facebook page that this will be his last season. Jeter missed almost all of last season with different injuries.
In his letter to fans, he says, “The one thing I always said to myself was that when baseball started to feel like a job, it would be time to move forward.” He continued, thanking fans, managers, coaches, and George “The Boss” Steinbrenner.
Commissioner Bud Selig released a statement after the announcement, “In the 21-plus years in which I have served as commissioner, Major League Baseball has had no finer ambassador than Derek Jeter. Since his championship rookie season, Derek has represented all the best of the national pastime on and off the field. He is one of the most accomplished and memorable players of his — or any — era.”
For his final year, he says, “. . . I want to soak in every moment of every day this year, so I can remember it for the rest of my life. And most importantly, I want to help the Yankees reach our goal of winning another championship.” Since Jeter’s time with the Yankees started in 1996, the Yankees have won five championships.
