Fox Sports is reporting that Miami Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin has “gone AWOL” the last couple of days after a practical joke got taken too far during practice. Reportedly, there was an incident in the team cafeteria in which teammates left the table as soon as Martin sat down. It was all meant to be a joke, but Martin did not find it very funny. He got up, smashed a food tray on the ground, and stormed out. That was the last time teammates saw him.
The Dolphins are scheduled to play the Cincinnati Bengals tomorrow. Martin has been listed as doubtful for the game with an illness. Martin is seeking treatment for an undisclosed reason, and the Dolphins have stayed silence on the issue. Head coach Joe Philbin said he would only discuss players who practiced and Martin was not one of them. It is unclear when he will rejoin the team.
Whatever triggered Martin I am glad to see he is getting help to address. If he does suffer from a mental illness, it is not a joke and there is nothing funny about it. Wishing Jonathan Martin all the best and a speedy recovery!
