Dwyane Wade has always been an inspiration on the basketball court. In the 2006 NBA Finals, he averaged 34.7 points and was named most valuable player of the series. However, since stepping away from the game last season, Wade has become an even bigger inspiration as a friend, husband and father.
Married to Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade is a parent to his oldest son Zaire, 12-year-old son Zion, his son Xavier from a different relationship, nephew Dahveon and baby girl Kaavia. He has embraced all of his children and their differences. Zaire is currently playing high school basketball with LeBron James’ son Bronny. Kaavia is an Instagram rockstar, better known as #ShadyBaby. Zion is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and prefers she/her pronouns.
Wade, speaking with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on their podcast “All the Smoke”, opened up about educating himself about how to be a better parent. “I watched my son, from day one, become into who she now eventually come into. And for me… nothing changes in my love. Nothing changes in my responsibilities. So, all I had to do now is get smarter educate myself more. And that’s my job,” he stated.
Despite their openness, he understands the world may not view Zion in the same light. He posted a family picture on Thanksgiving and instantly received backlash for Zion’s appearance.
He commented his son Zion’s strength, “You want to talk about strength and courage…my 12-year-old has way more than I have.”
The entire Wade family has been supporting of Zion even making an appearance at Miami Beach Pride. It’s truly beautiful to see the entire Wade family be so supportive. It’s also beautiful to see Zion living in his truth and gaining confidence instead of hiding his true identity. The Wade’s should be motivation for any family trying to navigate any type of situation.
