On their first full day back to school, the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had a special guest. Recently traded Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade stopped by the high school where just weeks ago 17 students and teachers were shot to death. As the students try and find their new normal, it was nice that Wade stopped by to talk with the students and listen to what they have been advocating since that tragic day.

After the visit, Wade posted about his time with the students and the conversation they had. Wade felt especially affected when he found out one of the students, Joaquin Oliver, killed on February 14th was a huge Miami Heat fan and was buried in Wade’s jersey. Wade has paid homage to Oliver since the shooting, including dedicating the season to him and writing his name on his shoes the night he hit a game-winning shot.
I just had a great conversation with some of the students at Stoneman Douglas High School about some important/impactful things that they have planned. I’m looking forward to being more involved in the change that they WILL create. #MSDStrong 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Our conversation about bridging the gap between the students from Parkland, Florida and Chicago was really impressive. These young adults GET IT. They understand the power of their voices for the ones that often go unheard!

Secretary of Education Betty DeVos was also at Stoneman Douglas High today. According to student’s social media, she did not answer any questions nor did she sit down and meet with any students.
.@DwyaneWade met with the students, sat down and talked to us and asked important questions, secretary of education did not. Wade also met with Joaquin Oliver’s brothers @shehatesjuju and @A1_a1sinceday1. He did more than someone who has the political power to make change. pic.twitter.com/mGVW8zf6U8

Do something unexpected: answer our questions. You came to our school just for publicity and avoided our questions for the 90 minutes you were actually here. How about you actually do your job? #neveragain #DoYourJob https://t.co/4Ts0INq0gR

Once again athletes show that they will not “shut up and dribble” as some ignorant television hosts wish. They will be an active part of their communities and reach out to those who are not being heard.
