Eagles’ center Jason Kelce made an appearance this morning on 94.1 WIP Morning show and didn’t hold back from his distaste of the Cowboys organization and its fans.
“I would say mostly I just don’t think a lot of players, in particular me, just don’t really like the franchise, the organization, what it stands for – what its always stood for. This goes back to the lockout when they were getting replacement players, how outspoken the Dallas Cowboys franchise was in ending that.”
In case you weren’t aware, during the 1987 lockout, Cowboys players went on strike during week three and were replaced by “scabs”, NFL replacement players that carpooled to different cities to play games and struggled to purchase suits for post-game interviews. Players lost out on hundreds of thousands of dollars for missed games and a fight over a guaranteed percentage of revenue, while owners wanted a right of refusal and lower compensation for certain free agents.
Kelce’s frustration for this strike may arise from the fact that the Cowboys top players crossed the picket lines with a fear they would lose out on their high salaries. The 1987 Eagles, a notorious union city, did not like the fact that scabs were hailed as heroes in the city of Dallas, adding to the teams’ rivalry.
Kelce began to slam Cowboys fans shortly thereafter, stating “I’ve just never really appreciated what the organization – and what its fans really stood for. A lot of fair weather people from across the country that just kind of fell in love because they’re winners instead of having any type of emotional connection to the team whatsoever.”
He didn’t completely slam everyone on the Cowboys, he stated he has respect for a lot of players, but most of his disdain is based around the organizational decisions the Cowboys have made throughout the years.
Kelce is understandably not a huge Cowboys fan being that he plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, a division rival and current reigning champions. The Eagles are currently 4-4 while Dallas is currently at 3-5 going into week 10.
