It’s been two months since the Caps made Washington sports fans’ collective year, bringing home the Stanley Cup at the start of June. While the swimming-in-D.C.-fountains phase might have worn off—might have; it’s still pretty hot in the nation’s capital—the team remains very much in celebratory mode. And what’s part of any good celebration?: Food.
It was starting to feel like I couldn’t scroll through Instagram without seeing another Capital using the Cup as a serving dish. This had me wondering, just how many things have the Caps eaten from the Cup?
As it turns out, I’m not the only curious one. Scott Allen, sports reporter for The Washington Post, compiled a list of what the Capitals have put in the championship trophy so far. Food wise, here’s what’s made the cup—er, I mean, the cut.
Caviar
Alex Ovechkin went the fancier route, kicking off the traditional trend with Russian caviar. While visiting Moscow in July, the Capitals captain hosted a party at Modus restaurant, where party-goers scooped the salty delicacy out of the top of the trophy.
Pepperettes
Scott Murray stuck with savory too and enjoyed a pig roast on his day with the Cup. The goaltending coach hung with his dad, brother, and a heaping Cup of pepperettes while celebrating in his hometown of St. Clements, Ontario.
Cereal
T.J. Oshie and Tom Wilson got their snacking inspo from the most important meal of the day: breakfast. During their time with the Cup, each forward munched on a “bowl” of cereal—a popular choice for past Stanley Cup winners. Oshie chose Cap’n Crunch, Wilson went with Lucky Charms.
Borscht
While enjoying his time with the trophy in Winnipeg, Capitals defenseman Madison Bowey feasted on a Stanley Cup of his grandma’s borscht.
Ice Cream
Equipment manager Brock Myles’ kids and Director of Player Personnel Chris Patrick’s kids cooled off with some ice cream out of the Stanley Cup, setting the bar high for all future sundaes.
Alcohol
Okay, so alcohol isn’t food per se, but according to Keeper of the Cup Philip Pritchard, the trophy can hold about 10 pints of bubbly, and many Capitals have taken advantage of that too. Matt Niskanen, Michal Kempny, and many of their teammates imbibed some (large) cold ones on their respective days with the Cup. Then, Capitals video coach Brett Leonhardt enjoyed another summer favorite: the margarita—salted Stanley Cup rim included.
