Tiger treaded into the clubhouse carding an 82 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open this past weekend—his worst round as a professional golfer. Is the great Tiger Woods losing his edge?
With his last major with at the 2008 U.S. Open and last PGA Tour win back in August 2013, it seems as if Tiger is on the decline. Issues with his back limited him to 9 starts in 2014, missing the cut for the PGA Championship and finishing dead last in his own Hero World Challenge.
So what’s the deal Tiger? Many say it’s more than just a slipped disc keeping him from the top. For many professional athletes, a condition called “The Yips” or involuntary wrist spasms that occur during a putt. The yips have plagued many golfers in the past, and is seems as though Tiger has caught a case of them too.
One of the game’s top teachers, Bill Harmon, says this isn’t a problem that’s going away any time soon. For most golfers who suffer from this condition, it only affects their putting game. However, Tiger seems to be having issues in all aspects of the game, from driving to putting. Tiger’s yips are here to stay—at least for a while, explained Harmon.
Whether it is Tiger’s chronic back problems or recently developed yips, Tiger has lost his edge. He no longer owns the number one spot in the world rankings, and the question on everyone’s mind is, will he ever get it back?
