With the end of 2015 upon us, the year was full of multiple sports moments worth noting, including the achievements of females in sports. ESPNW has decided to use their platform to showcase these outstanding females in a different and interesting way by teaming up with Marvel to create comics of ground-breaking females. A partnership made in heaven.

Every year, ESPNW comes up with a list that “honors the people who make the biggest imprint on the sporting world each year” entitled the IMPACT25.  A few of the honorees influenced male sports, however, a majority of the honorees have impacted female athletics. Each year, ESPNW picks one of the influential females to receive their “Woman Of The Year” award. Last year’s “Woman Of The Year” was awarded to Spurs’ assistant coach, Becky Hammon who also made this year’s list as well.

Some of the women on the IMPACT 25 include Ronda Rousey, Serena Williams, Dr. Jen Welter, Erica Enders, and Lauren Greenfield. A full list of the IMPACT 25 can be found on ESPN. However, the biggest and one of the most exciting changes from last year is that ESPNW has teamed up with Marvel to create comics for some of the honorees which include their “superhero names”, a short bio on why they are being honored, what they contributed, and a link to their “full impact bio.”

The drawings were done by Marvel artist, Jamal Campbell.  Even though all of the women were not featured in the article, they were all given the “Marvel” treatment. ESPNW’s decision to use Marvel comics to showcase these women is not only exciting for the women involved, but one of the most refreshing ways to honor these females. Congratulations to all who were nominated and all of the women who are truly superheroes!

  1. Did we all forget Ronda Rousey got her ass handed to her? Wouldn’t a better choice for a super hero be the woman who beat the crap out of “the invincible one?”

  2. […] too. One of the biggest events that Gentile has started with espnW is the Impact25. Her decision to collaborate with Marvel to showcase the women who impacted 2015 in sports was a stroke of genius and one that won’t […]
