State Farm Arena– Saturday, June 26th was an amazing WBA super lightweight battle between pro-fighters Gervonta Davis (25-0, 24 KO) and Mario Barrios (26-1, 17 KO). Barrios suffered his first pro loss in his career that evening, after being TKO’d in the 11th round from a left uppercut.
Barrios accepted the loss graciously, telling the State Farm Arena crowd, “I’ve never been a hater. Congrats to ‘Tank.’ He came here and did his thing. It was nothing short of an exciting fight and that’s exactly what both of us predicted. He was the better man tonight, but I’ll definitely be back”. He also added, ‘Tank’ is explosive,
“He caught me slipping and it’s boxing. At the end of the day, one punch can change the fight. That’s exactly what I felt happened. Congrats to him.”
When Barrios arrived home in San Antonio, he received an overwhelming amount of support, both online and in-person. Here are some of the tweets that caught our attention:
Despite the loss in Atlanta, Barrios and Davis both put on an explosive performance. Barrios was able to get back up after two knockdowns in the 8th round. In the 9th round, Barrios was able to win the round on the unofficial scorecard, prompting Floyd Mayweather to tell Davis in his corner that he was down. This was the motivation that Davis stated he needed to finish the fight off with a TKO.
Personally, I have not seen a collective amount of support for a boxer from San Antonio despite a loss in a very long time. Hopefully, the overwhelming support Barrios received despite his loss will motivate him to come back in the ring more than ever.
