Ever since the shocking trade between the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets, rumors have been swirling about the reasoning. Why would the defending champions trade away one of their biggest playmakers for a conditional draft pick? A guy they traded for and cost them a FIRST round draft pick? It was especially puzzling when the Seahawks let wide receiver Golden Tate walk in the offseason. Tate went on to sign with the Detroit Lions.
Rumors leaked out that Harvin was a cancer in the locker room who did not get along with other teammates. That was then followed by another rumors that running back Marshawn Lynch nearly did not travel with the team this week after learning about the news. Pretty much making the initial rumor false.
Another rumor came out that Harvin butted heads with teammates, including Tate. The rumors went as far as to suggest the two receivers go into it the night before the Super Bowl, resulting in Tate getting a black eye. After the Lions game, Tate was asked the rumors and tried to dance around them saying that is Seattle’s problem and not his. He did, however, clarify, “I didn’t get punched in the face, that’s all a lie.” So I guess that is another rumor that can be marked off as false.
Unfortunately, the real reason will likely never be know, but being that the NFL is a business first, money likely played a part. The Seahawks just gave monster deals to their defensive studs, Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman, and will now look to lock up their quarterback Russell Wilson who is in the final year of his contract. Having to pay a receiver who Seattle clearly valued who likely put them over the cap.
Even worse news, the Seahawks are struggling right now, losing two games in a row. The team is full of injuries and has lacked the explosive plays a guy like Harvin who is known for.
