OTAs just started and already the Giants are scrambling. This is certainly not the way the reigning Super Bowl Champs wanted to start the 2012-13 season off. Hakeem Nicks, number one receiver, fractured his fifth metatarsal while running routine drills. He will have surgery later this week and is expected to be out of practice for the next 12 weeks. Nicks was a crucial part in the New York Giants’ amazing playoff run. He has the memorable ‘Hail Mary’ catch against the Green Bay Packers. The Giants are definitely in some trouble losing Nicks since they lost another vital member of the squad, Mario Manningham, to free agency. He ended up with the San Francisco 49ers along with another fellow Giant, Brandon Jacobs.
This is not what the Giants needed. They have a very young set of receivers and Nicks was a good role model for them to follow. It gets his catches and stays humble throughout the season. He is not one of those flashy wide receivers we have seen over the years. The most experienced receiver will now be Victor Cruz who is only entering his second year in the NFL. Nicks needs to have a speedy recovery because the Giants have a long, tough schedule for the second year in a row.
Bad news any time but especially when trying to overcome the inevitable super bowl hangover.
