The purpose of Global Wellness Day is to encourage us to consider how we can live a healthier and better life.
Turkey introduced this day of living well in 2012 and it is now celebrated simultaneously in 130 countries. There are many ways to make wellness a lifestyle, but GWD suggests these seven simple steps to consider incorporating into your daily life:
1. Walk for an hour
2. Drink more water
3. Don’t use plastic bottles
4. Eat healthy food
5. Do a good deed
6. Have a family dinner with your loved ones
7. Sleep at 10:00 PM
The hashtags #globalwellnessday & #GWD2019 blew up on social media yesterday. Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King even jumped on board to document the start to a morning hike in honor of the day.
Shockingly, I did the same and didn’t gain as much traction as the two celebrities. I began my GWD by enjoying a freshly made juice, courtesy of my fantastic husband. Then we took our inspired butts to the gym for a nice workout and followed it up with a delicious protein acai bowl. The last on the list was the most important to me, listening to ‘The Courage to Be Disliked” on audible while riding my bike and observing nature.
I am a firm believer in the power of mental wellness. It takes priority in my life today to declutter my brain of any negative thoughts and attitudes. The book I mentioned above offers a philosophy that is deeply liberating, a guide to change the limitations we place on ourselves.
In order to obtain any form of physical health and wellness, we must begin with our mindset. I have found over the last 25 years that incorporating a daily routine to ignite my mental wellness has saved me from a path of potential destruction. It keeps me accountable for my own actions and offers empathy for those who have yet to encounter mental health and wellness.
The offering of Global Wellness Day is the perfect opportunity to jumpstart your path to wellness. I can attribute my passion today for physical wellness to the early introduction of sports as a young girl. Team sports was where it all began for me, and up until the age of 32, I played on an adult softball team. It wasn’t until I broke my ankle and took a line drive to my lip that I hung up my cleats.
Being an athlete taught me not only what my body was capable of accomplishing, it also jumpstarted my journey to mental strength. Today, my desire to play on this global wellness team is still alive and well and I owe it all to playing sports as a young girl.
