Being an athlete is only for people in the early part of their lives who trained their entire youth to compete with the best in the world right? Wrong! Dr. Agnes Green is proving that you can be an athlete at any age. Currently running an age management center “Ageless and Evergeen” in Florida, Dr. Green is inspiration to anyone looking to follow their sports dreams.
Dr. Agnes Green, welcome to Sports As Told By a Girl.
Thank you, it’s a pleasure to be here.
So here we are. Dr. Green. My very first client.
So proud. Six years since we 1st worked together.
So there’s a few fun facts about Dr. Green that not many know but we’re here to give you some insight. So I write for this wonderful platform called Sports As Told By a Girl and if there is one person in the world that should be talking about sports, it’s Dr. Agnes Green. So one day, I came by the office and you told me that you were on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Yes.
She told me like it was no big deal. Because she was like, well, it was in New Mexico. Okay, listen carefully everyone. I don’t know anybody that’s been on the cover of Sports Illustrated. So I want you to tell everybody, first of all, how that happened. How did you get on the cover of Sports Illustrated?
Well, I am a Master’s athlete and they have a Master’s, or we call it the Senior Olympics. It’s all over the United States.
What is a Master’s athlete?
You have to be over 40 which I am. And they have the Senior Olympics every two years in Birmingham, Louisville. This year it was in Albuquerque, one year was in Palo Alto and Stanford.
So you’ve gone to all of them?
Yes, I have. And so in New Mexico, they will take pictures for the local Sports Illustrated winners. And they took my picture and they asked me, would I mind being on the cover? And I said, I would love to be at the cover, what an honor.
So besides being on the cover of Sports Illustrated and being involved in that since that day, I actually know that you’ve been involved in more competitions.
Yes. back the first of August we have the USA track and field masters throws championship.
How did you place?
Well, once I finished that competition I was number two in the United States in shot but number three in the United States in discus number one in the United States in the ultra weight in line.
I don’t even know what that is?
In the US when tattled on throw a 20 pound weight, a 25 pound weight, a 35 pound weight, a 40 and a 44 pound weight and they will look me number one in the world in the ultra weight.
In the world?
In the world, yes.
So now, I know a little bit more about your story because you have transformed your entire life. This was not always something that you did, can you talk about that shift for you?
I did not start competing until I was in my 40s. I knew I couldn’t run fast, right? So I said, you know, that’s not for me. And then I saw the field events, that kind of felt right with me. And so I went from there to where I am now.
You know, I work out & take care of myself because I surround myself with doctors such as yourself that have taught me that are our health is our wealth.
Our greatest wealth, yes it is.
What advice would you give to any girls that want to get involved in athletics? Don’t you agree that more women need to be on the cover of these magazines? What do you think they should do?
The first thing I would say don’t be afraid and never let age stop you.
In masters track and field we have people in their 80s and 90s competing, so pick something that you enjoy and just work on it. Constantly. Get a coach or if you know somebody who’s better than you, utilize their information, their skills, because most of us
athletes who are masters, we do not mind helping other athletes who are interested in what we do.
