Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston, Heisman Trophy winner and former MVP, won his personal conduct hearing held by the university and will not face disciplinary charges for the alleged sexual assault that occurred in 2012.
A report was initially filed with the Tallahassee Police Department in 2012; however, the state police did not begin an investigation until 2013, and ultimately no charges were filed against the star athlete. The New York Times then began their own investigation into the case, and published a detailed article about the errors made by investigators.
Winston was forced to attend this month’s disciplinary hearing to determine whether he had violated the university’s personal Code of Conduct – the hearing took place just under two years after the assault allegedly occurred.
Justice Major B. Harding, a former Florida State Supreme Court justice, presided over the hearing. The hearing itself did not determine whether Winston or the alleged victim were right, it determined whether there was enough evidence to punish Winston under school code.
Winston released a statement stating that he did have sexual relations with the woman, but that they were entirely consensual.
I’m sure this is not the last we’ll hear of this case, and as the saga unfolds hopefully some light will be shed on what actually happened that night in 2012.
