Joba Chamberlain has always been a thorn in the New York Yankees side. He has not pitched since April and when he does pitch, he is not always Mr. Reliable. One person in the Yankees bullpen who is as reliable as it gets in baseball is Mariano Rivera. It turns out, Chamberlain does not hold Rivera to that level like the rest of baseball does. While Mariano was doing interviews in the dugout before their game against Kansas City, Joba supposedly started screaming and carrying on while signing autographs for fans. Rivera turned to Chamberlain who was on the railing of the dugout and asked him to quiet down because he was talking about his emotional day with different families dealing with personal tragedies.
Clearly Joba did not like that and decided to tell Mo how he really felt. He turned around and told Mo “Don’t ever shush me again”. He didn’t take him to the side, but instead decided to say it in front of fans and reporters. Joba felt that because he was with his family that he could laugh and carry on without regards for others. Taking the high road like the professional that he is, Rivera simply stated, “We’ll take care of it. We’re grownups and I know better than that. We’ll take care of that.”
Really? How old is Joba that he has to throw a tantrum in front of the media who he knows will run with this story. News media did catch up with Joba today to see if he wanted to apologize for his immature outburst, but instead he chose to just be Joba instead. “I wouldn’t change it. I wouldn’t change anything I do in life.” “It happens. You fess up to it, you talk about it, you laugh and move on. That all you can do. It’s not really a story to begin with.” If it is no big deal why not just say that you could have handled it better? Hopefully the Yankees front office can do some damage control quickly so that this story does not get blown up even further!
