Heartbreaking news for two of Atlanta’s top receivers. Falcons receiver Julio Jones learned this morning that his brother Phillip was shot in the arm in Jones’ hometown of Gulf Shores, Alabama. Some news sources are reporting that his arm was amputated. An arrest has been made in the shooting. George Bennett Sutton has been charged with a Class-B felony.
Jones was present at OTAs, but did not participate in any drills on the field. He is still nursing a foot injury that kept him out for most of last season. The sad news comes just two weeks after fellow receiver Roddy White learned that his half brother had been shot to death outside of a night club. Tyrone Moore Jr. was killed outside of a South Carolina night club. Darnell Claven Lafayette has been charged in connection with the murder.
Roddy White was not present at OTAs, something that did not surprise head coach Mike Smith. He said, Of course, Roddy and his family are going through a very difficult time right now. I spent time with Roddy last week. These are not mandatory sessions. Our thoughts and prayers are still with Roddy and his family in this difficult time.” Smith and quarterback Matt Ryan attended Moore’s funeral.
