San Antonio– Former AAF San Antonio Commanders outside linebacker Jayrone Elliott is committing to the Miami Dolphins. This news comes fresh from the recent news that the American Alliance of Football league was to be suspended, largely due to logistical hurdles, and failed negotiations with the NFLPA to utilize NFL practice squad players.`
Elliott began his career as one of two undrafted players to make the Green Bay Packers opening roster in 2014. He spent nearly four years with the Packers before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 7th round pick in order to add depth to the Packers’ linebacker position in 2017.
In 2017, he was waived in order to activate defensive end Damontre Moore, and signed a reserve contract with the New Orleans Saints in 2018. He was released on September 1st, 2018.
However, that did not stop Elliott from his passion for football. In late 2018, Elliott signed with the AAF to play linebacker for the San Antonio Commanders. With his new opportunity, he had more playing time than ever before. In opening week, he obtained 3 tackles and sack.
Throughout his AAF career, he also had a few strips, and was deemed one of the league’s best rushers. He had an AAF record of 7.5 sack throughout 8 games. He also forced four fumbles, and was successful at maintaining pressure on quarterbacks.
On April 5, 2019, the AAF officially announced the startup league was suspended permanently. Due to legal reasons, they were not discussing the issues behind the scenes or ramifications for the employees. However, it has been widely reported that players were struggling to get paid, and they were being sent home without their flights being paid for.
Despite the shocking news, many league players still had hope. The league provided them opportunities to play on a national scale, and many NFL scouts were attending the games to scope out their next prospect – one of which was Elliott.
It is reported that four NFL teams were scouting Elliott to be on their roster. It was announced today he committed to the Miami Dolphins.
