The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded their captain, Dion Phaneuf, to the Ottawa Senators a big nine-player deal. The Senators announced the blockbuster deal on Twitter.

In the deal the Sens acquired, not only Phaneuf but, forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, and Ryan Rupert, and defense prospect Cody Donaghey. In exchange for these players, the Sens sent defenseman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg, and their second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft to Toronto.

So far this season Phaneuf has 24 points (three goals, 21 assists) and has collected 67 penalty minutes in 51 games with Toronto this season. His contract carries a $7-million dollar cap hit through to the 2019-20 season; the defenseman had to waive a no-movement clause in order for this trade to take place in the first place.
Frattin, this season, has recorded nine goals and 13 assists through 47 games with the AHL’s Marlies. Bailey has 18 points, four of which are goals in 38 games, also with the AHL this season. Â Rupert, also with Toronto in the AHL, recorded six goals and 12 points in 29 games this season. Donaghey, the 19-year-old defense prospect, was signed by the Leafs as an unrestricted free agent and has five goals and 22 points in 36 Quebec Major Junior Hockey this season.
Cowen has four assists in 37 games this season, with 15 goals and 46 points in his 249 career games. Greening has only played one game this season, but has 38 goals and 87 points in 256 NHL games.  Michalek has six goals and 10 points this season, with 206 goals and 438 points in his 729 career games. Lindberg has recorded five goals and 17 assists through 34 games with the Binghamton Senators in his rookie season.
No salary will be retained by either team on the trade, allowing Toronto to clear some long-term salary cap space as a result.
