Just hours after Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart pushed a “fan” in the crowd, he has already found out his punishment. His head coach Travis Ford announced his star player would be suspended for three games. During the final seconds of Oklahoma State’s game against Texas Tech, Smart attempted to block a shot, fell into the media section out of bounds, and addressed a fan that was allegedly shouting something at him.
It has still not been made clear what exactly was said, but many suspect the fan called Smart the n-word. Immediately when Smart got up, he turned around and addressed the fan. Visually furious, he then proceeded to put his hands on the fans, knocking the man back a few steps. The man, identified as Jeff Orr, calls himself a diehard “fan” of Texas Tech. He admitted to yelling at Smart and issued an apology today.
“I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere apologies to Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State, Tubby Smith and the Texas Tech Men’s Basketball program,” Orr said. “My actions last night were inappropriate and do not reflect myself or Texas Tech — a university I love dearly. I regret calling Mr. Smart a ‘piece of crap’ but I want to make it known that I did not use a racial slur of any kind. Additionally, I would like to offer my apologies to Texas Tech fans that have been embarrassed by the attention this incident has created.”
This is not the first time Orr has been called an overaggressive fan. In 2010, during a Texas Tech game, he was allegedly caught on camera giving Texas A&M player Bryan Davis the middle finger. The incident did not escalate, but it may suggest that this is nothing new. Current NBA player John Lucas III says that he remembers Orr from his playing days in the Big 12. Fellow NCAA player, Jabari Parker, sent out his support for Smart last night. Smart was dead wrong for losing his cool and putting his hands on another person. However, if this “fan” has made it a habit to try and provoke players with racist remarks then he needs to be banned from attending games. Smart will be available to play February 22nd, when his team takes on Texas Tech.
