While nothing concerning the New York Jets and their quarterbacks is ever surprising, this may just be a first. After taking a hard hit to the shoulder during a preseason game against the New York Giants, Mark Sanchez’s shoulder injury may be worse than anyone could have imagined. Dr. Andrews confirmed that Sanchez suffered a labral tear in his right shoulder. The hit was delivered by defensive tackle Marvin Austin during the fourth quarter of the game. Many questioned head coach Rex Ryan’s decision about playing Sanchez so late in the game with the backup offensive line. Is is clear that it was a bad decision after all.
If there were ever any doubts that the Geno Smith era has begun in New York, they are now over. While Sanchez will reportedly think things over before he decides to have surgery, he will likely not play one minute of this season. Many Jets fans had hoped that Sanchez’s days in green were coming to an end, but I doubt many had hoped it would happen like this. It has been a very rocky road for the Jets and Sanchez who experienced great success at the start of his career, but have plummeted since. The one time most talked about quarterback race has now become a clear cut decision.
