Brandon McCarthy has a big road ahead of him after getting smacked in the head by a line drive hit by Los Angeles of Anaheim Angels shortstop Eric Aybar. It was just one of those freak accidents that you hope never happens. McCarthy went straight down after being struck in the head, but managed to walk off the field while holding the side of his head. McCarthy suffered an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion, and skull fracture. He went through two hours of surgery on Wednesday night just to relieve the pressure on his brain. Doctors are saying he is still not out of the woods yet as he is on day 3 which means the swelling can still come back. “Absolutely he is. It’s brain surgery,” Oakland A’s medical trainer Nick Paparesta said. “It’s life-threatening. At any possible moment, something could go wrong. He could have a complication. Absolutely.” McCarthy has gotten out of bed and eaten solid foods, but cannot talk yet because of the excruciating pain. Manager Bob Melvin said that the situation has weighed heavy on all the players, but are happy to hear he is making progress. So how exactly does Eric Aybar feel about this? He probably isn’t feeling all too well. “It has been a tough last two days for me as I keep replaying in my head when the ball struck Brandon,” Aybar said in a statement released by the team. “I am encouraged and thankful to know he has made significant progress, and I keep praying to God to help him recover quickly and fully. I also pray for him and his wife. Our game is a tight brotherhood, and right now we all wear the same uniform colors.” All the members of the Angels’ organization came out and said something. These are the type of situations that show even though baseball is not a contact sport, it is still a very dangerous one. This might be one of the scariest moments in all of sports that I have ever seen. Everybody should keep McCarthy in their prayers and hope that he makes a speedy recovery!
