If you’ve ever watched the Olympics, then you know who Michael Phelps is. As the most decorated athlete ever, Phelps is competing in his last Olympics ever and at age 31, do you blame him?
Today during the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay, Phelps helped give his team the edge and was able to get them ahead by a few crucial seconds. Those few seconds made all the difference as the US walked away with the gold medal and Phelps won his 19th gold medal. In addition, Phelps was also chosen to carry the US flag for the opening ceremony because there was really no one more deserving.
Phelps wasn’t the only one on the team. He was aided by Nathan Adrian, Caeleb Dressel, and Ryan Held. Even though it might seem like Phelps is getting all the recognition, the credit has to go to every member of the team. If you’re looking to see Phelps by himself, then you’re in luck.
Phelps will be making his individual Olympic debut. He will be competing in the 200m butterfly, the 200m individual medley, and the 100m butterfly. The 200m butterfly will air tomorrow while the 200m individual will air on Wednesday and the 100m will air on Thursday.
Phelps’ history with the Olympics is a long one, but he began competing in 2004 in Athens which is where he literally swam away with America’s heart. In addition to the his 19 gold medals, he has won two silver medals and two bronze medals. He won silver during the 2012 London games in the 200 m butterfly and the 4×100 m freestyle. His two bronze medals came in 2004 during his debut in the 200 m freestyle and the 4×100 m freestyle.
