Just when you thought the Washington Redskins situation could not get any uglier, it just got a whole lot uglier. It is no secret that head coach Mike Shanahan and quarterback Robert Griffin III have differing opinions. While sometimes these things can be solved, apparently the situation is much worse than any of us were aware of. Rumors circulated that Shanahan originally wanted to draft Ryan Tannehill and disagreed with owner Dan Snyder’s idea of trading up to get RG3. Well, when they were winning last season, it looked like everyone had put their differences aside. At least that is how it appeared.
A rumor is now circulating that Shanahan had prepared to quit his coaching job before the Wild Card playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. So what stopped him? That was the game Griffin has torn his ACL and he did not want it to look like that was the real reason he was leaving. Reports also say that Snyder’s “coddling” of the quarterback led him to act bigger than the team. Something that was very visible throughout the season by fans and others. Griffin became more worried about commercials than team success. Many teammates accused of Griffin not being a good enough leader, something expected from the quarterback.
Now, Washington is out of the playoffs and it looks like Shanahan will be out of a job because there is no way Griffin will be leaving after all Snyder did to get him in last year’s draft. This may be the best thing for both parties, but if Shanahan leaves it will likely mean Kyle Shanahan, Washington’s offensive coordinator and Mike’s son, will also walk.
