MLB has handed down the punishment for the bench-clearing brawl between the Brewers and Pirates. It all started with Carlos Gomez and Pittsburgh pitcher Gerrit Cole exchanging words on third base after Gomez admired his hit a little too long for Cole’s liking. Cole, who was close to third base to back up the play, did not walk back to the mound before having words with the Brewers slugger.
The benches immediately emptied with every available player running onto the field. Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado managed to land a punch during the melee. Maldonado’s punch found Travis Snider’s face and left him with a few bruises and cuts on his face.
No surprise Maldonado received the longest suspension, five games while three other players were also suspended and fined. Pittsburgh pitcher Gerrit Cole who was in the initial argument with Gomez was not suspended for his role in the fight.
