While everyone in preseason was ready to hand the Heisman to Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, a freshman at Florida State was getting ready to shock everyone. Jameis Winston is only a freshman, but already has been making heads turn. Today, he led his offense to a commanding 63-0 victory of number 25 Maryland. He has 1,048 yards on the year including 393 yards today! Winston has five touchdowns, but did make one mistake, throwing an interception. He did not even play the fourth quarter to rack up stats like that. What makes him so amazing is his composure in the pocket and ability to make the long throw down the field. In his first game against Pittsburgh, Winston broke FSU’s completion record, completing 25 of his 27 passes. He is only 19 years old!

Now thanks to some witty nicknames like Famous Jameis and Jameis Christ, he is one of most well known college athletes in the country before turning 20. Winston could follow in Manziel’s footsteps by winning the Heisman trophy as a freshman like he did last season. He has a similar style of play in the ability to scramble when flushed out of the pocket and convert big plays. Having to play more time in college before being eligible to enter the NFL Draft, Winston will only get better and is already being considered a number one draft pick. Others say he is already better than the guy he replaced this season, Buffalo Bills starting quarterback EJ Manuel. This is some high praise for a player who has only played in a handful of games, but he has earned it so far.
