The case that left the beautiful Reeva Steenkamp dead and her boyfriend, Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, accused of the crime has finally gone to trial. Pistorius does not deny shooting his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day a year ago, but says he did it because he thought she was an intruder. He alleges he heard a noise coming from the bathroom and shot through the door in fear. Pistorius is without both legs and claims he did have his prosthetics on which caused him to be more fearful and shoot without thinking.
The first witness to testify was a neighbor, Michelle Burger, who claims she heard Steenkamp’s “blood-curdling screams” that of the murder. Burger claims she also heard four shots that night and was awoken after hearing the first one. Pistorius’ attorney tried to claim that maybe Burger may have heard Pistorius screaming, after discovering there may be an intruder in his home, and instead confused it for Steenkamp’s voice. She assured the defense attorney that she heard “woman’s terrible screams” that night.
