Has there ever been a team quite like the New York Jets? It just seems that no matter how much progress they make, they always get pulled back to mediocrity. This year was supposed to be bright for Gang Green.
It’s the second year of Sam Darnold’s career as starting quarterback and the team added running back Le’Veon Bell to make this an explosive offense. Well, after losing in the last minutes during their season opener against the Buffalo Bills, the team was dealt quite the blow today.
Darnold is expected to miss multiple games not due to an injury, which is good I would never hope that he gets injured, but because the 22-year-old quarterback contracted mononucleosis. Mononucleosis is a virus that is spread through saliva and symptoms can include fatigue, fever and swollen glands. Treatment can take up to a few weeks to fully heal from the virus.
The team has already announced Darnold will miss the team’s Monday night game against the Cleveland Browns. They are expecting to be without him beyond this week as well unfortunately. After this week the schedule does not get easier for the Jets and losing their quarterback for an extended period of time could really set them back. After this week, the team plays their biggest rival New England and then after a bye week play the Eagles, Cowboys and of course the Patriots once again.
Of course, that’s not the only sidelined player the team is dealing with; it’s the Jets after all. Earlier this week, wide receiver Quincy Enuwa was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a neck injury. Enuwa missed the entire 2017 season with a neck injury. It doesn’t stop there.
Today, Bell underwent an MRI on a sore shoulder. Luckily, it appears to be more precautionary than anything else. Bell took to Twitter to announce the MRI came back clean with no structural damage and he should not miss any time.
The team will most likely be without inside linebacker C.J. Mosley and safety Jamal Adams who both did not practice today. Newly acquired receiver Demaryius Thomas, who is coming off an Achilles injury, is also nursing a hamstring injury and has not yet practiced with New York. He hopes to play Monday, but only time will tell if he is active for the game.
Trevor Siemian will start in Sam Darnold’s place while he is sidelined.
