Defenseman and captain of the New York Rangers Ryan McDonagh is out indefinitely for the remainder of the regular season due to an upper-body injury sustained on Monday in Columbus. McDonagh was injured by trying to block a shot with his hand in the first period of the Rangers’ 4-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
On Tuesday, the Rangers recalled defenseman Brady Skjei from Hartford of the American Hockey League. McDonagh, a vital part of the team, holds 34 points in 73 games and averages a Rangers-high 22:21 per game, two minutes more than anyone else. Prior to this injury, McDonagh missed six games earlier in the season with concussions, four games in February after a punch by Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, and two games after taking an elbow to the face from Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov.
It is not projected yet if he will return for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
