Tuesday nights New York Rangers/Washington Capitals hockey game in Washington was a night that New York will never forget. The two teams battled it out on the ice for what was an interesting hockey game. The game featured the Leagues leading goal-scorer, Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals with 45 goals, and Rick Nash, who is trailing behind him by six goals.
For the first time this season, the Rangers, who have been continuosly trailing their rivals, the New York Islanders, are dominating the Metropolitan Division. Holding the first spot with 91 points, they have made it clear that they are New York’s team.
After Carl Hagelin gave New York the lead, Ovechkin came in to score goal number 45, tying the game at 1-1. The tie went on to be broken by J.T. Miller with an assist from Kevin Hayes who assisted the first goal as well.
During a scoreless second period, though both teams seemed to be gaining some animosity between them due to goal preventions, the ongoing persistence of both sides grew more and more. The lack of scoring clearly showed who it had a positive effect on, and who it was effecting negatively.
The third period is where things became interesting, and you could see that it was really getting to the Capitals and they just didn’t want to accept it. Fast forward to seconds before the Capitals go for an empty net, and Martin St. Louis goes in for an energetic breakaway goal that just could not be stopped. Assisted by Chris Kreider, the fans, and Capitals goaltender Matt Niskanen probably hadn’t even seen that one coming. Down by two with just a few spare minutes left in the game, Washington tried to turn it into a one point game, while Carl Hagelin tried to go for an empty netter, but hit the post instead.
Once the blow of the whistle came, it was over for Washington, but for New York, it had just gotten even better!
